Ikekomi-gata, buried lanterns

Ikekomi-Gata (buried lantern) also called ikekomi-doro (planted lanterns) were first produced in Japan during the Momoyama Period (1568-1615). Designed specifically for the roji (gardens developed in conjunction with the tea ceremony) by the ancient tea masters, they are believed to be among the oldest type of garden lanterns.

Due to the lack of a pedestal the shaft is sunk directly into the ground hiding the unfinished portion of the basin.

In most cases they have square or round shaft. They are often sited near to a Tsukubai, a water basin. As there is only a small hole required to install the lantern minimal damages to already existing plants and roots will occur.

Shoukintei

Shoukintei lantern are named after the oldest and largest of the four tea pavilions at Katsura Palace, an imperial villa located in Kyoto, Japan which was built under the guidance of Prince Noritada in the mid 17th century.

The building is sited across the main pond so as to command an overall view of the Katsura gardens.  The Shoukintei is the most highly ranked teahouse in the villa. Based on a wood frame construction, the building shows a hipped and gabled thatched roof over the parlor, a wood-shingle roof over the tea ceremony room, and a tile roof over the domestic spaces.

All five elements of the Shoukintei lantern are round, the sunk has the typically unfinished portion of the shaft.
